Big Band sound
The Butler County Symphony Orchestra continues its 65th season with “Sal Andolina’s Big Band Bash” featuring Buffalo Philharmonic clarinetist Sal Andolina in a tribute featuring American standards by Cole Porter, George Gershwin and Jerome Kern.
The March 8 concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Butler Intermediate High School auditorium.
Guest artist Andolina will perform big band standards with the orchestra.
A saxophonist-clarinetist virtuoso, Andolina moves freely between a classical repertoire and jazz.
As a solo touring artist, he has appeared at major venues, including Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center in New York, and in Los Angeles on the “Tonight Show.” His recent international performances include a tour in Japan in 2007.
Since 1994, Andolina has been clarinetist, bass clarinetist and saxophonist with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, where he has been featured as a supporting soloist with Marvin Hamlisch, Doc Severinsen, and others including Natalie Cole, Nancy Wilson and Maureen McGovern.
He has released a tribute to Benny Goodman on a solo CD titled “Like Benny to Me.” Just released is “A Medley of Masterworks for Solo Clarinet.”
Also playing with the symphony will be harpist Sophia Lee, winner of the 35th annual Young Artist Competition held in January.
In addition, the symphony will welcome “Young Musicians of Note,” Butler County school students in seventh through 12th grades who were nominated by their teachers for outstanding musical aptitude.
Music director Matthew Kraemer will host a lecture at 6:30 p.m. that will include snippets of the music to be performed.
Tickets are $23 for adults and $5.50 for students and are available at the symphony office, 259 S. Main St., from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. weekdays, or at www.Show Clix.com.
