Hooping for a Cure at SRU Wednesday
SLIPPERY ROCK — The Slippery Rock University men’s and women’s basketball teams will join the fight against breast cancer when they host a “Hooping for the Cure” event in conjunction with a doubleheader against California (Pa.) University Wednesday.
All fans who wear pink to the games will be admitted for free.
The women’s game tips off at 6 p.m., followed by the men’s game at 8 p.m.
Both teams will wear specially made “Hooping for a Cure” t-shirts during warm-ups as part of a league-wide initiative from the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference.
Cabrera, Indians avoid arbritration
CLEVELAND — BAll-Star infielder Asdrubal Cabrera and the Cleveland Indians have agreed to a $4.55 million, one-year contract and avoided salary arbitration.
Cleveland’s best player last season, Cabrera hit .273 with 25 homers, 92 RBIs and 32 doubles. He made $2,125,000.
The Indians have not gone to arbitration since 1991.
Pats’ Gronkowski has ankle surgery
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski had arthroscopic surgery on his left ankle.
The injury hampered Gronkowski in the Super Bowl, when he had just two catches for 26 yards in the 21-17 loss to the New York Giants in Indianapolis. His recovery schedule will last 10-12 weeks.
Gronkowski suffered a high-ankle sprain in the AFC Championship game against the Ravens at home, a 23-20 victory.
Federer defeated in Davis Cup play
FRIBOURG, Switzerland — Roger Federer was jolted at the Davis Cup with a four-set loss to John Isner, leaving the United States ahead 2-0 in the first-round series.
Isner won 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (4), 6-2, his big serve backed by booming ground strokes that challenged the Swiss star in long rallies on the indoor clay court.
