Silvester returns in Harmony
Silvester will make its triumphant return Dec. 31 as Harmony will ring in the new year with its German compatriots.
At midnight German time — 6 p.m. in Harmony — a lighted ball will fall in Harmony's town square and fireworks will launch, giving residents and visitors a six-hour jump on their festive celebrations.
It also will mark the end of an hours-long celebration, with businesses opening their doors, and food and beverages being served.
Harmony Museum will host a Christmas tree-tossing contest for adults and a wreath-tossing event for children under age 10 at 3 p.m. in the museum's driveway. Winners of the competitions will receive $20.22 in gift certificates to three local businesses.
Town shops and restaurants will have end-of-year specials, and visitors can park for free in any commercial or public lot throughout town.
The Silvester 5K and 1-Mile Fun Run or Walk also will return. The 5K will begin at 3:30 p.m., while the fun run and walk will begin at 4:30 p.m. Racers can preregister online or register on New Year's Eve at the Grace Church gymnasium from 1 to 3:15 p.m.
Harmony Fire District volunteers will serve food and beverages, and the Harmony Museum will offer a pork and sauerkraut dinner for carryout. Those interested in the Pennsylvania Dutch traditional meal can reserve a dinner and pickup time online.
While COVID-19 hasn't canceled the event, the museum said some indoor events will not occur. The train display, wine cellar, film and museum tours will be unavailable to ring in 2022.
And, as with seemingly all events in Harmony, the event will feature Glühwein, the hot-mulled cider. The Harmony Museum will begin serving the spiced wine in souvenir mugs at 3 p.m.
