PITTSBURGH — A judge has indefinitely delayed the execution of an unemployed white immigration attorney responsible for a Pittsburgh-area shooting rampage that eventually left six people dead.

Forty-four-year-old Richard Baumhammers, of Mount Lebanon, was scheduled to be executed March 18. But Allegheny County Judge Jeffrey Manning stayed that execution Friday after Baumhammers' attorney filed notice of a new appeal.

Gov. Ed Rendell signed a death warrant in January.

Baumhammers shot his Jewish neighbor, two Indian men, a Chinese man, a Vietnamese man, and a black man on April 28, 2000.

He was sentenced to death for the five victims who died outright. The sixth victim, 32-year-old Sandip Patel, of Plum, was left paralyzed and died of complications from pneumonia in 2007.

HARRISBURG — Pennsylvania's government corruption trial has been delayed by the latest winter storm.The opening of Friday's court session was postponed for two hours because of the weather.The trial of former House Democratic whip Mike Veon and three former aides at Harrisburg's Dauphin County courthouse is now four weeks old. It is expected to stretch into March.The defendants are accused diverting public resources and state employees for election efforts and other improper purposes.

PHILADELPHIA — Casino developer Stephen Wynn says he's planning a "straightforward casino" rather than a resort for the embattled Philadelphia gambling project he wants to take over.Speaking on a Wynn Resorts earnings conference call on Thursday, Wynn said he hopes to build a casino with restaurants beside the Delaware River, but no hotel.Wynn on Tuesday announced a plan to take control of the stalled Foxwoods project from a group of investors and the Mashantucket Pequot tribe.The project was granted one of the city's two slots licenses in 2006 but has encountered significant neighborhood opposition. The deal is contingent on approval by state gambling regulators.
