He's on the clock
BUFFALO TWP - The clock is ticking for Duane Getty.
The veteran driver of the No. 1 Pure Stock car - one of the oldest cars in the pits each Friday night at Lernerville Speedway - never has won a feature in his 13-year career behind the wheel.
"The car has won, but I never have," the Cranberry Township resident said.
Getty, a 1979 Mars graduate, built the car with Jim Irvine Sr.'s help in 1992. He still races the same car today.
"If it's not the oldest car out here, it's pretty darn close," Getty said.
Dave Pegher drove the car to feature wins in the Super Seniors series in 1995, 1996 and 2000, winning twice at Challenger Raceway and once at Pittsburgh's Pennsylvania Motor Speedway.
Getty's best finish in a feature this year has been eighth. His best-ever feature finish was second in 1995.
"I've won 10 to 12 heat races and probably that many consolation races over the years," he said.
By this time next year, Getty, 44, might not be racing at all. He plans to switch roles with his 16-year-old nephew, Bob McGee, his crew chief for the past four seasons.
McGee has a yearning to drive a race car. Getty is in the process of building a four-cylinder car for him to race at PPMS.
"If the car's ready before the end of the season. Bob will get a few races in it just to get the seat time," Getty said. "Once he's ready to jump into the Pure Stock, he's in and I'm out.
"I'll become his crew chief. I owe it to him. That kid's been unbelievable. He knows the car. He does the welding on it, the maintenance - everything."
McGee has been self-taught, for the most part.
"Since my dad and uncle raced, I got into it," McGee said. "I picked things up over the years and have just kept up with the race car.
"Over the past year or so, yeah, I've wanted to drive it. I can't wait to drive it."
Nobody knows the No. 1 Pure Stock like McGee.
"I guess that will play to my advantage once I'm driving it," he said. "It's gonna be weird, switching places."
Getty hasn't given up on winning a feature yet. The motor in his car is two years old. He's put a new body on it every year and the parts have been upgraded.
"I tore up the front end in a wreck at Tri-City, the back end in a wreck at Mercer and I rolled the car at Challenger," Getty said. "But we've kept up with the times and the car has gotten faster.
"With the right (pill) draw and if everything breaks right, I feel like I can still win. The goal has always been to win."
The problem is other Pure Stocks have gotten faster, too.
"Chris Schneider has built cars for a lot of these guys," Getty said. "These younger guys have got it. They know what they're doing."
Getty has twin 15-year-old sons, Justin and Jason, "and it wouldn't surprise me if they're out here racing at some point.
"I still do this because it's fun. I do it for family, too. My sons, nephews and nieces are always out here," Getty added.
But that clock is ticking.
"I'll probably be driving it next year," McGee said of the yellow No. 1. "I'm hoping to drive a Pure Stock for a long time."
