Outlaws sweep

Darrell Lanigan (29) of Union, Ky., finished fourth in the World of Outlaws Late Model feature Tuesday at Lernerville Speedway.
Pa. driver wins all his Late Model races

BUFFALO TWP — Rick Eckert found the 11-day wait to be well worth it.

The World of Outlaws Late Model event at Lernerville Speedway originally was scheduled for April 7. But when rain pushed it back to Tuesday night, Eckert stole the show.

After winning the fastest lap competition with a time of 15.66 seconds at the start of the evening and then winning his heat race and the pole position, Eckert claimed the 50-lap main event and the $10,000 that came with it.

The victory was swift, as the race featured no caution flags.

It was the York, Pa., resident's second straight win on the Outlaws tour. He won last Saturday at Virginia Motor Speedway.

"This car has been good to us most of the year," said Eckert following his win.

Though he earned the pole position with a victory in a four-lap dash between the four heat race winners, Eckert found himself in second place behind Steve Francis by the end of the first lap in the main event.

Francis held onto first place until Eckert passed him on the 27th lap and secured the lead for the rest of the race.

"I thought I gave it away at the start," Eckert said with a laugh. "But eventually I saw a lane and I took it."

Eckert completed his sweep of the night's events with a dominating performance over the last 20 laps of the race.

After 31 laps, his lead over Francis was just over a car length long. By the 43rd time around, it was half a straightaway long.

Near the end of the race, Eckert found himself dodging lap traffic.

"It got to the point where I was catching lap cars two or three abreast," said Eckert. "And with lap traffic, the advantage always goes to the guy in second place. But, fortunately, I got through it."

Eckert hugged the corners after getting his lead, still wary of Francis.

"I'm riding the bottom, but I thought any minute he was going to drive right past me."

Francis briefly slipped to third behind Tim McCreadie on the 49th lap, but was a distant second by the finish.

"I thought my rear tires were too hard and the front ones were too soft," said Francis. "I still don't think we would have had enough at the end to pass (Eckert), but we could have made it closer."

"I thought I might have been good enough to get second," said McCreadie, who took third. "Rick definitely had the best car and I was just happy to be in the top three."

Eckert entered the evening eighth in the Outlaws points race, but he got a boost from his second win in a row. It was his first ever win at Lernerville.

Darrell Lanigan and Billy Moyer finished fourth and fifth, respectively.

The only two area drivers to make the main event were Cranberry Township's Lynn Geisler and Sarver's Ken Schaltenbrand. Both drivers qualified by finishing third in their respective B-Main events.

Geisler pulled out of the feature with car trouble on the 12th lap, finishing last. Schaltenbrand ended up next to last.

Notes: A total of 51 cars began the night before the main-event field was trimmed to 26. ... Zelienople's John Flinner saw his night come to an end with a crash in the third heat race. On the third lap, Flinner was on the inside about to negotiate turn two when he hit the berm and flipped over twice. He was able to remove himself from the car quickly before walking away.
