Modified race loses steam
BUFFALO TWP — Zelienople's John Flinner came from 10th to win the Late Model feature. Chicora's Greg Beach came from 12th to win the Pure Stock event.
Dan Shetler of Johnstown pulled off the best maneuver of the night to win the Sprint feature.
But the best race of Friday night's Lernerville Speedway card was probably the race that never happened.
Brian Swartzlander and Rex King were running side by side for the lead coming around Turn 3. midway through the 40-lap BRPModified feature when King's No. 65 pulled off the high groove and went straight to the pits.
The BRPModified series points leader — and winner of the BRPseries race here May 5 — was done for the night.
"The motor just locked up on me ... I probably broke something near the top of it,"King said. "I felt it coming around Turn 3.
"I just took the car out of gear and got it off the track."
Swartzlander cruised to victory from there, easily beating runner-up Del Rougeux to the checkered flag.
Swartzlander had a full straightaway lead before a 30th-lap restart, then took off again.
"The car was awesome tonight,"the Leechburg driver of the No. 83 said. "My crew deserves all the credit. We raced last night and I had to work all day today. They got the car ready and it was right on."
The win marked Swartzlander's 47th career victory at Lernerville. It's his first checkered at the Sarver track this season.
But he could see it coming.
Swartzlander finished second in a race at the Trumbull County (Ohio)Fairgrounds Thursday night and won a feature Monday at the Central Pennsylvania Fairgrounds.
He's also had a few second-place finishes in Gary Risch's No. 3Gcar here this season.
"They (King and Kevin Bolland) have had great years, but we've been right there with them,"Swartzlander said. "We just haven't been able to catch many breaks."
He may have caught one Friday when King headed to the pits.
"I've got a lot of respect for Brian and he's fun to race against,"King said. "There would have been a lot of clean, hard racing and passing between us if I could have finished."
Sprint Feature
Shetler won his first career Lernerville feature by splitting race leaders Mike Shearer of Freeport and Ed Lynch Jr. on the 19th lap, moving from third to first.
The move denied Shearer his first Lernerville feature win since 2003.
"The lapped traffic went my way,"Shetler said. "I saw the opening and I took it."
Shetler made only his second appearance of the season here. He finished eighth the other time. He ran his own car here regularly from 2003 through 2005.
Shetler plans to return Tuesday night for the Don Martin Memorial Silver Cup World of Outlaws race.
"I thought I had this one,"Shearer said. "The restarts were working out for me and I was really solid on the open track."
Shearer started in the front row and held the lead for the first 20 laps. His previous best finish this year was fifth.
Late Model Feature
Five-time defending points champion Flinner, out of contention for a sixth crown this year, passed pole-sitter Alex Ferree of Saxonburg on the 18th lap and held the lead from there.
The win was Flinner's second of the season and 37th of his career here.
Pure Stock Feature
After failing to win a feature here since May 2005, Beach notched his second consecutive triumph.
The driver of the No. 33X passed Butler's Nick Reges on the 12th lap. Reges, who started up front, had led the race since the second lap.
Beach managed to break out of a five-car pack running together, with Reges maintaining a slim lead over the other four. He took the low groove and found the lead.
"When you're in a freight train, you have to try something,"Beach said. "I thought I could do it, but you never know."
Beach's young son stood on the roof of the car in victory lane, waving a checkered flag in jubilation.
"He usually likes to hang out at home,"Beach said. "This win is special to me because he was here."
Notes:There were 96 cars in the pits, including 31 Modifieds. ... Time trials for the World of Outlaws Silver Cup race begin at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday, racing at 8.
