Bolland wrecks the competition
BUFFALO TWP — From total wreck to complete winner, Kevin Bolland didn't waste time completing the journey.
The New Brighton driver of the No. 777 completed his impressive comeback with a Modified feature win Friday night at Lernerville Speedway.
Bolland badly wrecked his car during the first dirt race at Virginia Motor Speedway nine days ago. He and his race team drove to Lernerville the next day, arriving at the track at 7:30 p.m. and finishing up repairs while the heat races were being run.
"We got out there for the feature, tailed the field and got up to 12th before I got mixed up with Jimmy Weller and had to park the car," Bolland said. "My crew went to work all day Saturday, we fixed the car again and won at Tri-City on Sunday."
Bolland started from the fifth position Friday and grabbed the lead from Dave Murdick on the 19th lap. Murdick led the entire race to that point, but the Slippery Rock driver had to pit shortly after losing the lead.
"I broke an axle," Murdick said. "I'm not sure when or how ¿ I was pushing the car pretty good. We were hooked up and I thought I had a chance to get by Kevin again ¿ all for naught."
Bolland had to hold off Brian Swartzlander — last week's feature winner — who started 12th and nearly caught Bolland on the final turn of the final lap.
" I wish I had another couple of laps," Swartzlander said. "Our car was pretty good again."
"I never saw (Swartzlander)," Bolland said. "I didn't know how close he was. Usually I notice a tire or something, but I was concentrating on maintaining my line and finishing strong."
Bolland's win was his second at Lernerville this season and 39th of his career, tying him with Ed Lynch Sr. for fifth on the track's all-time Modified victory list.
Bolland also became the first two-time feature winner at the Sarver track this season.
In other features:
n Mark Smith of Tower City — located north of Harrisburg — won the Sprint feature in his first-ever appearance at Lernerville. He started 10th and took advantage of a violent three-car accident off Turn 3 on the 12th lap.
Danny Holtgraver, a 20-year-old from Pittsburgh, won his heat race and jumped into the lead early in the feature. He got into lapped car Bud Watt and both cars flipped wildly off the track, coming to rest just in front of the fence by the pit area. Ed Lynch Jr. got caught up in the wreck as well, also flipped and suffered damage to the front end of his car.
"I thought I had enough room to get by way down low, but misjudged it," Holtgraver said. "Next thing I knew, I was in the air."
No drivers were injured in the mishap, though Holtgraver felt some soreness in his upper back and neck area. He was driving a new car for only the second time.
n John Flinner of Zelienople started up front in the Late Model feature and passed Alan Dellinger on a 24th-lap restart to post his first feature win here since July 14, 2006. Flinner only raced a couple of times late last season after winning five consecutive track championships from 2001-2005.
"Flinner's back. I'm here, man," he said in victory lane. "I miss doing this kind of stuff. This is the best part of racing."
Flinner stands third on Lernerville's career Late Model win list with 38.
n Greg Beach of Chicora started up front in the Pure Stock feature and held off Joe Kelley to record his first feature win of the season. Beach did not win a feature here last year and contemplated selling his No. 33X car late last season.
His last win at the Sarver track was Aug. 26, 2006.
Notes: There were 102 cars in the pits. ¿ The World of Outlaws Sprint car Commonwealth Clash takes place Tuesday here. Time trials begin at 7:15 p.m.
