Plethora of cautions aid drivers
BUFFALO TWP— Yellow might have been John Mollick's favorite color Friday night, but Brian Swartzlander didn't much care for it.
Caution flags played a major factor in the outcome of the Late Model and Modified features at Lernerville Speedway.
Mollick, driver of the No. 4JLate Model from Toronto, Ohio, started in the second row behind veterans Lynn Geisler and John Flinner, who have 145 combined career feature wins here.
Mollick had all of one, which he secured May 23.
Now he has two.
Geisler and Flinner came together on the fourth turn of the opening lap and both had to pit. Mollick took over the top spot and kept it for all 25 laps in a 35-minute race that had 12 restarts.
Mollick thrived on the restarts.
"My car was having a heating issue that got worse toward the end of the race," he said. "All of those restarts gave me chances to cool down a little bit.
"If we kept racing green, after a while, I would have had serious heating problems. No way could I have won."
Cranberry Township's Geisler returned in time for the third restart on the first lap, tailing the field. He wound up finishing second.
"Those yellows definitely helped me,"Geisler said. "Had all the cars gotten strung out all over the track, I never could have gotten all the way through."
Geisler originally was sent to the pits when the car driven by Zelienople resident Flinner drifted high on turn four, sending Geisler over the cushion.
Flinner's car never was right after that. He pitted before a third-lap restart and pitted for good on the 17th lap.
"That was just John and I racing hard, trying to get to the top first,"Geisler said. "I had no problem with it and I doubt he would have if the situation was reversed."
Mike Blose, who had shoulder surgery 2Z\x months ago and had Alan Dellinger driving his No. 5 car while he recovered, returned Friday night and finished third.
"I'll take it,"Blose said. "I have a tough act to follow. Alan did a great job for me."
Dellinger won one feature and two heat races in the No. 5 this season.
In other features:
• Starting from the 12th spot Swartzlander was bidding for a third consecutive Modified win at Lernerville. On a 23rd-lap restart, he apparently passed pole-sitter Jeremiah Shingledecker for the lead, taking turn one down low and sliding up to the top as Shingledecker's car went off the cushion.
But Brian Sadler's car spun out behind the action, forcing another 23rd-lap restart — and giving Shingledecker his lead spot back.
When the race was started again, Swartzlander tried the same move. This time, the cars bumped together coming off turn two.
"I had him the first time, that's for sure,"Swartzlander said. "The second time, we were so close. ... I feel bad that I bumped him. Jeremiah was running so well. I backed off once we came together. He beat me to the spot."
Shingledecker wound up in victory lane at Lernerville for the first time this season. He also won June 1 at Tri-City.
• Bob Felmlee of Seneca started seventh in the Sprint feature, took advantage of two flips in front of him on the first lap, grabbed the lead on the fourth lap and maintained it from there.
Scott Priester of Rimersburg flipped his car on turn one of the first lap. On the restart, Ed Lynch Jr. and Butler's Brian Ellenberger came together on turn one and Lynch flipped his car.
The 2Lwas done for the night. Ellenberger had a flat tire, returned and finished fifth.
Rod George of Kittanning was pushing Felmlee midway through the race before his accelerator broke on the 14th lap.
"I didn't know how much fuel we had left,"Felmlee said. "It couldn't have been much."
Eight years ago on this date, Felmlee broke his neck in a Sprint car accident.
• Jason Fosnaught apparently won his first Pure Stock feature of the year, but was disqualified because of an illegal part.
Runner-up Joe Kelley was awarded the victory, his second this season and 26th of his career at Lernerville. He trails Scott Bochek by three for the division's all-time lead here.
