Tale of 2 races
BUFFALO TWP — It was a tale of two races Friday at Lernerville Speedway — the one Ed Lynch Jr. controlled for 23 laps and the one with two of his competitors nipping at hsi Sprint car wings.
Lynch led from the beginning of the 25-lap Sprint race, but with a caution flag after the 24th lap, all lapped cars were sent to the back on the restart.
In the meantime, Rod George and Brian Schaeffer, who were about one straightaway behind Lynch, got to restart right behind without any traffic.
With the race having to finish with two consecutive laps, Lynch was still able to pull away en route to his 98th Sprint car victory at Lernerville and his 99th win overall.
George finished second and Schaeffer crossed the finish line in third.
"That new car, it was the first time we ran it on a smooth track," said Lynch. "Nothing was going to beat that car expect for me. I drove it hard and it felt good.
"If someone was going to beat my car, let them do it," Lynch added.
Lynch has won five of the seven races at Lernerville this season.
George and Schaeffer made good runs in the race as the drivers started in 10th and 12th place, respectively, before moving up to second and third.
"We were pretty good, but Ed was just better," said George. "He was on the pole.
"We were struggling with the motor all night. We were trying to save it for the feature. The last two weekends we've struggled with the motor," George added.
Said Schaeffer: "Anytime you put Ed in the front of the road, the chance of us getting to him are not good."
In the Late Models feature, Alex Ferree of Saxonburg and John Flinner of Zelienople were 1-2 from the start until Flinner slipped past Ferree on lap 16.
Flinner was entering the final turn on the final lap when Jared Miley cut into Flinner, which sent Miley airborne and almost into a full flip. Flinner, however, sustained some damage but was able to finish the race.
Like the Sprint race, inside the final five laps, a race has to end with two laps in succession, so Satterlee passed Flinner on the next lap and held on on the final lap to edge Flinner.
Satterlee, who won his fourth race at Lernerville this season, was eighth after the first lap and stayed out of the picture before he was fourth at the caution on lap 25 and was able to take the lead before the next lap.
"I just worked my way back from where I was," said Satterlee of Rochester Mills. "I still thought I ran out of time.
"I knew I would have to use my momentum to get by (Flinner). He had beat me the lap before," Satterlee added.
Flinner, who was visibly upset after the race, did not comment.
With Lynch and Satterlee enjoying another victory at the track, Jeremiah Shingledecker captured his first Modified race of the year while Portersville resident Ryan Moyer won his first race at Lernerville.
Shingledecker, of Polk, and Tom Winkle of Mars led the first five laps and Shingledecker was second until the sixth lap, when he took the lead for good.
Winkle stayed in second place for the next nine laps before finishing in third place. Kevin Bolland of New Brighton finished second.
For Moyer, 23, he got the lead early and maintained it for his first triumph.
"The car was very good," said Moyer. "We went out there on the track and kind of stuck on top where I usually like to run. Then, I went down. That's where the traction was."
Moyer made the move around the third lap as Hanley was trying to run outside.
Moyer was eyeing his first win, but also had his sights on something else.
"I kept looking at the scoreboard," said Moyer. "I wanted to see who was behind me."
