The Butler County Early Care and Education Council will hold two events next week for Week of the Young Child.

Lifesteps will do free developmental screenings for children up to age 5 from 1 to 6 p.m. at All Saints Lutheran Church in Slippery Rock. Stories and crafts will be available. Appointments for screenings are preferred; call 724-283-2154, Ext. 313.

Activities are scheduled for 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Butler Public Library for children from birth through grade school. Author Anne Slanina will read her book "Baby Brother Goes to the Hospital," and Butler Mayor Maggie Stock and Butler County Judge Marilyn Horan will hold story time. A family magic show is scheduled at 7 p.m. with Steve Haberman.

The council also will collect paper products for needy families Tuesday.
