Virginia Mangel of Butler Township was named Granger of the Year for the Butler County Pomona Grange May 19 at the county's All Granger Banquet at Unionville Grange Hall. She also received the Community Service award at a County Rural Life Sunday church service May 4.Mangel joined the Eureka Grange 244 in 1968 and currently is a member of Unionville Grange 1971 where she holds the office of Lady Assistant Steward. She serves as the Family Activities chairman for the Butler County Pomona Grange and State Directory of Family Activities. In her time as a granger, she has served on committees across the state including the Good of the Order Committee, the newspaper committee publishing "The Advocate," and the Family Festival Committee.The grange has done work for military families as well. Mangel served in a support group for Desert Storm families, planning a celebration for the county when the war was over. Another project she worked on was "Quilts for the Brave," which provided more than 200 quilts to wounded soldiers returning to the states.Several community service projects she worked on included planning an Easter egg program for Lifesteps children, making wheelchair and walker totes for the elderly, raising money for the Rotary Turkey holiday fund and the Salvation Army Christmas project, making Dignity Shirts for breast cancer patients and ABCquilts for children and collecting items for food banks.Mangel lives in Butler Township with her husband, Richard, and has two children, Danny and Kelly. She recently retired from the Butler School District where she worked as the secretary for the maintenance department.
