KARNS CITY — Five Karns City boys soccer players received All-Upper Allegheny Valley Soccer League honors. The Gremlins won their fifth straight UAVSLtitle with a 12-2 record.

Senior goalkeeper J.J. Grenninger was selected to the team for the third time, recording 13 wins and eight shutouts on the campaign. Junior forward Eric McCue is a first-time selection and led the Gremlins with 23 goals.

Junior sweeper T.J. Johnston is a first-time selection and scored four goals. Junior midfielder and 11-goal scorer Nick Lopresti, along with sophomore defender Ethan McGarvey, were honorable mention choices.

AMARILLO, Texas — Lindsey Stevenson of Renfrew, along with RLCocoas Version, will be among the 53 contenders for the Featherlite All-Around Amateur Award at the 2008 Bank of America Amateur competition through Nov. 22 at the American Quarter Horse Association World Championship Show.RLCocoas Version is a 1997 Sorrel American Quarter Horse gelding.The award is presented to the amateur exhibitor earning the greatest number of points in a minimum of two categories and three events on the same horse.

SLIPPERY ROCK— Slippery Rock University senior volleyball outside hitter Jen Blasko was named to the ESPNThe Magazine Academic All-District team by CoSIDA for the third consecutive year.Blasko, who has a 4.0 grade point average in exercise science, received more votes than any other candidate in the district, which encompasses Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and West Virginia.

PROSPECT— A-CValley and Karns City won the ABCYouth Football League Super Bowl games played last weekend at the Prospect Boys and Girls Club.A-CValley (10-1) won the first Senior division Super Bowl in the program's history, grabbing a 22-0 lead on Moniteau before holding on for a 22-16 victory. Moniteau finished 9-1.Karns City won the Junior division Super Bowl, defeating Punxsutawney 6-0. Both teams finished 9-1.Shannock Valley defeated Slippery Rock 8-0 in the Junior consolation game while Punxsutawney stopped Brookville, 14-6, in the Senior consolation game.

KITTANNING — Butler seniors R.C. Double and Tanner Master had five-point nights in Ford City's recent 11-2 hockey victory over Ferndale at Belmont Arena.Double had a goal and four assists while Master had two goals and three assists. Ford City is 3-0 in PIHL play.Double and Masters are playing for Ford City since Butler does not have a varsity team this season.

NEWCASTLE — Aubri McCoy and Justin Fulkerson, seventh graders at Grove City Middle School, earned spots in the Western Pennsylvania Regional of the NFL's Punt, Pass and Kick competition.Both will participate in the 12-and-13 age division exhibition at halftime of the Nov. 16 Pittsburgh Steelers-San Diego game at Heinz Field.McCoy had the top score in the nation for girls ages 11-and-12 last year and competed in the national championships at Indianapolis.

SAN DIEGO — The San Diego Padres Friday exercised their $9 million option on right fielder Brian Giles, whose .398 on-base percentage was one of the best in baseball.The 37-year-old will be back for his seventh season with his hometown Padres. The team had a choice between the option or a $3 million buyout. Giles hit .306 with 40 doubles and 12 homers, along with 63 RBI and 87 walks.

Houston signs reliever HawkinsHOUSTON — The Houston Astros signed right-handed reliever LaTroy Hawkins to a one-year contract for $3.5 million Friday.The Astros acquired Hawkins from the New York Yankees on July 30. The 35-year-old pitcher did not allow a run in his first 22 games.
