Man accused of having bags of suspected heroin
A weekend traffic stop netted a big find for Butler police.
Seized Sunday afternoon were dozens of bags of suspected heroin and hundreds of dollars in suspected drug money.
Police also arrested the alleged dealer, 18-year-old Peter D. Stevens of Pittsburgh.
Stevens, who faces felony and misdemeanor drug possession and other charges, is being held in the Butler County Prison on $25,000 bail.
Patrolman Jeremy Walters was on duty about 12:30 p.m. when he noticed a car with illegal sunscreening travel south on Wagner Avenue from West New Castle Street.
The officer stopped the car a short time later. The driver, later identified as Stevens, smelled of alcohol and appeared to be under the influence, according to court documents.
Stevens was arrested once Walters believed the suspect had a suspended driver’s license. Police later learned that Stevens also initially gave the officer a bogus name.
While taking the defendant out of the car, Walters spotted a stamp bag of suspected heroin on the front floor. Stevens was eventually taken to Butler Memorial Hospital for a blood test.
Afterward, and before being taken to the county jail, police noticed the defendant take something from inside his underwear, using his left hand, documents said.
He refused to open his hand for officers, who had to deploy a Taser to get him to comply, police said.
Out of the hand fell 38 bags of suspected heroin stamped with the street name”Mood Swing,” police said.
A search turned up $585 in currency that the defendant carried in two pants pockets, documents said.
Stevens is charged with possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance, a felony, and possession of a controlled substance, a misdemeanor.
Additionally, he is charged with driving under the influence by a minor, resisting arrest and false identification to police, all misdemeanors.
He also was cited for driving with improper sunscreening and driving with a suspended license.
