Rock men win thriller, enter PSAC tourney

SLIPPERY ROCK — Senior point guard Amante Britt drained a 3-pointer with three seconds remaining Saturday, giving Slippery Rock University’s men’s basketball team a 71-70 win over Pitt-Johnstown at Morrow Field House.

SRU (17-11, 11-11) closed the regular season and will have a rematch with the Mountain Cats (19-9, 15-7) in the first round of the PSAC Tournament at 7 p.m. on Monday in Johnstown. The two teams split their regular season matchups.

Khalid Gates came off the bench Saturday to lead SRU with 13 points, He had nine rebounds and four assists as well. Lashon Lindsey contributed 12 points, six rebounds and two assists. Britt had 11 points, four assists and four steals.

Jomo Goings and Bobby Clifford scored 10 points each for The Rock. Clifford grabbed five rebounds.

John Paul Kromka led Pitt-Johnstown with 30 points and 11 rebounds.

Pitt-Johnstown 78, SRU (women) 69 — The Rock concluded its season with a 15-13 record overall, 10-12 in PSAC play.

Isabellah Middleton paced SRU with 19 points and four rebounds. Deleah Gibson had 18 points, five rebounds and four assists. Kelly McKnight came off the bench to score a career-high 11 points. Jada Ward had a career-best eight rebounds.

Ashley Norling led the Mountain Cats (16-12, 13-9) with 22 points, 11 assists and eight rebounds.

SRU completed its first winning season since the 2001-02 campaign.

Baseball

Luke Trueman pitched 6.2 innings, scattering three runs, but fell victim to defeat as Shippensburg secured a 3-1 triumph over The Rock on Saturday.

Gabe Stotler pitched a nine-inning complete game, striking out five and allowing four hits for Shippensburg. Alex Robenolt had two of SRU’s four hits.

The Rock (2-2) wound up splitting its season-opening four-game series at Shippensburg by splitting a doubleheader Sunday. The Red Raiders won the opener, 3-2, while SRU claimed the nightcap, 6-4.

Robenolt had four hits in the twinbill, including two homers and four RBI. Robbie Barrientos and Joseph Ehland added two hits each in the second game.

SRU begins a 12-game homestand March 3-5 with a four-game series against Alliance at Jack Critchfield Park.

Softball

SRU (1-3) split a doubleheader Sunday, losing to West Virginia Wesleyan, 7-5, and defeating Glenville State, 3-1.

Kelsi Anderson struck out 11 and allowed just two hits in The Rock win. Cami Fisk and Alexsa Hurd both homered on the day. SRU travels to Bowie State for a 1 p.m. doubleheader Saturday.
