Quantum brings 'Rain' to Iron City Brewery
PITTSBURGH — Quantum Theatre — known for staging its shows in unique places that aren't theatres — continues its 20th season with a new play by Andrew Bovell, the author of "Speaking in Tongues."
"When the Rain Stops Falling" opens with an invited audience at 8 p.m. today at Iron City Brewery, 3340 Liberty Ave. The official opening is Friday.
The play is set in the year 2039 when shifts in the weather have caused the mass extinction of most sea life.
Gabriel York, alone in a torrential downpour, finds himself on the receiving end of a long legacy of deception as a fish falls from the sky.
"When the Rain Stops Falling" stretches across time and place to weave an intricate story of seven people bound together by blood, circumstance and love.
The cast includes Robin Abramson, Bridget Connors, Daina Michelle Griffith, Daniel Krell, Nick Lehane, Zachary Nading, Mary Rawson, John Shepard and Philip Winters.
This is the first Quantum-style show for Nading, who graduated from Slippery Rock University this year with a bachelor's in theater and acting.
"This is actually my first professional production," said the East Brady native, who is pursuing a career in acting.
Though performing at such a unique site is new to Nading, he said the venue lends itself to this particular show."I think just the openness — it's huge, just a gigantic space — really helps a lot because the play is about timelessness and it really accentuates that," he said."It's definitely something new," he added.Nading is the son of Sharon Higgins of East Brady and David Nading of Butler.Curtain is at 8 p.m. Wednesdays through Saturdays and at 7 p.m. Sundays through Nov. 21.Tickets range from $30 to $45, with a limited number of $16 student tickets available.
