A couple of records, a conference championship, an NCAA playoff berth - Ashley Ordy wants to end her volleyball career with a bang.

The Butler graduate and Penn State-Behrend's the Libero - a backcourt specialist - is the lone senior on the Lions' roster.

"We're counting on Ashley for her continued solid performance from the back row," first-year Behrend coach Phil Pisano said. "We're also counting on her for leadership."

A three-year starter at Butler, Ordy never made the playoffs with the Golden Tornado.

She's made the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference playoffs every year at Behrend.

"We were always competitive at Butler, always close, but we never got in," Ordy said. "It's important to me to reach the AMCC Tournament again and win it this time. It's a cyclical thing."

The Lions won the AMCC Tournament and finished 22-10 during Ordy's freshman season. The squad finished 16-17 and 17-17 the last two years, finishing second and fourth, respectively, during the regular season.

The top four teams in the league qualify for the AMCC Tournament. The league champion qualifies for the NCAA playoffs.

"We're picked second in the preseason coaches poll this year, but I think we can win it," Ordy said.

"I know I have to be more aggressive this year, especially playing with new people. I used to get angry when I made a mistake. I have to play more relaxed, be a team player," she added.

Ordy thinks she can leave with a couple of school records as well. She led the team with 510 digs last year and has more than 1,000 in her collegiate career.

Behrend's career record for digs is 1,776, set last year.

"I'm only 5-feet-3, so when the Libero position was added to NCAA volleyball last year, I was the perfect fit," Ordy said. "It's easier for smaller players to go down and get the ball."

The Libero can stay in the back row for an entire match and is exempt from rotating. Last year, the Libero was not permitted to serve, however.

The latter rule hampered Ordy in her efforts to attain the school's service ace record.

This year, the NCAA has ruled that a team's Libero can serve the ball.

"Ashley only had five aces last year because she was almost always our Libero," Pisano said. "Now that she can serve again on a regular basis, I think she'll break the record regardless."

Ordy enters her final season with 144 career aces. The school record is 207.

"I probably have a better shot at the aces record than the digs," Ordy said.

Ordy is majoring in psychology with a minor in business. She attended Behrend because "I didn't want to go far from home and one of my best friends (Bambi Lewis) was coming here to play basketball."

Lewis, also a Butler graduate and Behrend senior, is a starting guard on the Lions' women's basketball team.

For Ordy, it's all about volleyball.

"I threw the javelin for four years at Butler," she said. "I was recruited for track at Behrend, too, but I wanted to concentrate on volleyball."

Ordy plans on going to graduate school next year for public relations. She is engaged to be married in July.

But she won't be giving up the sport she loves.

"If I didn't play, it would drive me crazy," Ordy said. "It may be a recreational league, intramurals - I'll keep playing somehow."
