Mary Alice Smallwood, 73, of Butler went to be with her Lord on Saturday at Butler Memorial Hospital.

She was born July 17, 1939, in Pittsburgh, the daughter of the late Michael W. Conway and the late Mary “Edith” (Shelby) Conway.

Mary Alice was a member of the First United Methodist Church where she sang in the choir, attended Asbury Sunday school class and was also a Sunday school teacher. She was a graduate of Hooker High School, Lillian S. Kaufman School of Nursing and Butler County Community College.

She worked as a nurse at Butler Memorial Hospital and later at a doctor's office, and she was a Realtor for Northwood Realty.

She belonged to the Oak Hills Garden Club, the Red Hat Ladies, the Salvation Army Board, the Butler County Drug and Alcohol Board, the Dunbar Community Center and the Alumni Board at Butler County Community College, was on Butler City Council and was an interim mayor. She also volunteered with Meals on Wheels.

Surviving are her husband, Wilbur “Pooch” Smallwood, who she married on July 2, 1960; two daughters, Marlene (Duane) Grant and Shelley Cook, both of Butler; a son, Stephen Smallwood of Butler; 11 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; six sisters, Audrey Royster of Atlanta, Ga., Marcella Miller of Grove City, Agnes Conway of Boyers, Odessa Conway of Franklin, Hazel Sheffield of New Brighton and Barbara Conway of Cheswick; former son-in-law, Eric Cook; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends.

She was preceded in death by four brothers and one sister.

SMALLWOOD — Friends of Mary Alice Smallwood, who passed away Saturday, Dec. 22, 2012, will be received at the Young Funeral Home, 127 W. Jefferson St., Butler, on from 1 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday.Services will be at the First United Methodist Church, 200 E. North St., Butler, at 10 a.m. Friday. The interment will be private.In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church or to Meals on Wheels, 218 E.
