PITTSBURGH — Stephanie O'Toole, 12, of Butler, took four first-places at the recent U.S.Swimming "A"Championships at the University of Pittsburgh.
The sixth grader set an AMSrecord time of 1 minute, 2.52 seconds in the 100 individual medley. Her winning time of 1:08.36 in the 100 breaststroke places her among the top 16 in the country in that event.
O'Toole also won the 200 IMin 2:14.20 and the 50 breaststroke in 32.11.
She will represent Fox Chapel at the Eastern Zone Championships in Buffalo, N.Y., next week.
The 2006-07 basketball season is nearly in the books, so that means it's time again for the Butler Eagle boys and girls all-star teams, as selected by the sports department.The girls team appear Wednesday while the boys team will be published Thursday.
Five Butler wrestlers have qualified for the Pennsylvania Junior Wrestling State Tournament in Johnstown this weekend.Ryan Hannon will compete at 105 pounds in the 12-and-under division while Eric Tuck at 92 pounds, Cole Baxter at 112, Michael Crawford at 112 and Aaron Werner at 252 will compete in the 14-and-under division.
Butler Catholic's seventh- and eighth-grade boys basketball team defeated Holy Trinity, 49-37, Sunday at Central Catholic High School to win the Pittsburgh Diocesan Championship.Bobby Swartwout was named tournament MVPand Vinny Schmidt joined him on the all-tournament team.Butler Catholic finished 12-0 in section play this season, 4-0 in the diocesan tourney. The Saints now advance to the state playoffs.Team members include Swartwout, Schmidt, John Barkus, Ian Cleary, Billy Smith, Corbin Seezox, Joey Friel, Michael Connelly, Josh Dymun, Philip Kietzli and Michael Schneck.Harry Leyland and Rob Swartwout coach the team.
