SLIPPERY ROCK — Slippery Rock University will host the panel discussion “The Power of Hair: Culture, Identity and Choice” from 7 to 8 p.m. Oct. 21 at Smith Theater.

The free event will feature five guests who will talk about the cultural meanings of hair, loss of hair and maintenance of hair.

Catharyn Burton and Yadira Lupian-Lua will talk about African American hair, Michael White will talk about baldness and Beth Neese and Debbie Hutchinson of Butler's breast cancer support group will talk about losing hair due to chemotherapy.

The panel will be facilitated by professor Cindy LaCom.

It is sponsored by the gender studies program and the office of multicultural development.

SLIPPERY ROCK — The Slippery Rock Community Library is seeking donations of books for its upcoming Mega Used Book Sale.The sale will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Oct. 30 and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 31 at the Slippery Rock township building, 155 Branchton Road.To make a donation, contact the library at 724-738-9179.

HARRISBURG — The Board of Governors of Pennsylvania's State Higher System of Education Thursday approved three new degree programs for Slippery Rock University.Starting in the fall of 2016, SRU will offer a bachelor of science in corporate security, a bachelor of science in homeland security and a master's of public health in public health, according to state officials.In the past five years, the 14 institutions that make up the state system have introduced 275 new degrees and certificate programs, while discontinuing 143 outdated programs and putting 246 on moratorium.

SLIPPERY ROCK — The Slippery Rock Rotary Club will serve a pancake dinner on Election Day, continuing a tradition that goes back more than 50 years.From 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Nov. 3, the Rotary Club will serve all-you-can-eat pancakes, sausage and drinks at the Slippery Rock Volunteer Fire Company social hall, 162 Elm St.Tickets are available on the day of the event, or in advance from a Rotary Club member.The event helps the club raise money for “Feed My Sheep” food cupboard, Slippery Rock Community Library, Slippery Rock Community Park, Slippery Rock Volunteer Fire Company and Rotary programs.
