Center Twp. yet to approve move

Office would go to public works

CENTER TWP — Township officials are continuing with plans to relocate the township’s municipal office on Sunset Drive to the township’s public works building on Henricks Road.

The plan also would likely move the township’s public meetings to the Unionville Volunteer Fire Department at the intersection of Mahood Road and Route 8.

Township Supervisor Andrew Erie made a motion at the board meeting Wednesday night to relocate the office to the public works building, but it failed by a 2-3 vote.

Supervisors Ed Latuska, Ken Frenchak and Phil Wulff voted against the motion because they said they do not have solid financial information on the cost of the move or what would need to be done to the public works building.

“I won’t vote for this until we have a formal plan with facts and figures,” said Latuska, who is chairman of the board.

Supervisor Alan Smallwood seconded Erie’s motion for the relocation.

None of the supervisors who voted against the motion said they were against the idea.

The board approved a motion to have Wulff, Smallwood and township secretary Anthony Amendolea prepare information on a move for next month’s meeting. The board expects the plan to be on the agenda at that time.

The board has been discussing the topic for several months. Wulff had previously been consulting with the township engineer about the feasibility of the move.

Township officials had previously discussed the possibility of renovating the public works building to accommodate public meetings.

However, simply moving the secretary to the building would be much less expensive.

“That would be a very minimal cost,” said Ron Olsen, township engineer. “And there would be no code issues.”

Wulff estimated moving the secretary would cost about $1,000.

Amendolea is the only employee regularly at the office building on Sunset Drive during the day.

The Unionville Volunteer Fire Department told the township earlier this year that it would be welcome to use the fire station as a meeting place.

The township hopes to move the operations at its municipal building to other properties and then sell or lease its property on Sunset Drive.

However, those plans are in the early stages.

“We need to take one step at a time,” Latuska said.
