Josie Lowers

Josie L. (Haines) Lowers, 97, of Freeport passed away Thursday at the Good Samaritan Hospice Unit at Concordia, Cabot, with her family at her side.

She was born Feb. 3, 1916, in Freeport to the late Robert “Bob” and Lena (Clark) Haines. She was a lifelong resident of Freeport.

Josie did housework for many people in the area, took in ironings and baked bread. She also worked for the former United Dairy Store in Freeport and volunteered for the Meals on Wheels for many years.

Mrs. Lowers was a member of the United Presbyterian Church of Freeport.

Josie lived a humble, beautiful life of service to others. Nobody can remember a time when she wasn't trying to help someone. When she wasn't entertaining somebody, she enjoyed working crossword puzzles, playing cards and watching Lawrence Welk.

She is survived by her children, Doris (Hines) Antoszyk of Cabot, Pat (Hines) Hoover and her husband, “Buzz,” of Sarver, Sue (Hines) Hunter and her husband, Bob, of Freeport, John R. Lowers and his wife, Susan, of Freeport and Beth Ann (Lowers) Acre and her husband, Darryl, of Fawn Township; 15 grandchildren, Gary Antoszyk, Mark Antoszyk, Joann (Antoszyk) Colpo, Brian Antoszyk, John Antoszyk, Pam (Hoover) Walters, Denise (Hoover) Polliard, Paula Hoover, Curt Claypool, Greg Claypool, Jodi (Claypool) Crytzer, Kimberly (Lowers) Scalzott, Krystin (Lowers) Hanley, Angelia (Acre) Gaito and Shelby Acre; 39 great-grandchildren; 19 great-great-grandchildren; and one great-great-great grandchild.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John W. Lowers in 1995; son-in-law, John J. Antoszyk; granddaughter, Debbie (Hoover) Ukish; her sisters, Hazel (Haines) Demski, Leora (Haines) Felton, Roberta (Haines) Griffin and Elmira “Teenie” (Haines) Frankenberry; and her brothers, Bill Haines, Clark Haines and Charles Haines.

LOWERS — The family and friends of Josie L. (Haines) Lowers, who passed away Thursday, Aug. 1, 2013, may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday and from noon to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the DENNIS J. DAUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME, 324 Fourth St., Freeport. Funeral ceremonies will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the United Presbyterian Church of Freeport with her pastor, the Rev. Dr. Page L. D. Creach, officiating. Burial will follow in the Freeport Cemetery, Freeport.In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations may be made to the United Presbyterian Church of Freeport, 411 High St., Freeport, PA 16229.
