Leona M. Miller

Leona M. “Grandma Bucky” Miller, 96, of Butler, formerly of Goosetown, Chicora, died Saturday of natural causes at the YWCA Butler, where she lived.

Born Feb. 20, 1920, in Chicora, she was the daughter of the late Martin Hemphill and the late Martha Yough Hemphill.

She graduated in 1938 from the Frederick School of Chicora in Goosetown.

She worked with her husband, George, and her son, Georgie, at Miller's Garage in Goosetown, Chicora, for many years.

She worked at Fisher's Dry Cleaners in Butler. She drove a school bus at Shriver's in Butler for the Butler School District and drove a school bus for Clarence McCormick of Chicora for the Karns City School District. She was a janitor for the Karns City High School for four years, and she was a janitor for the Butler Police Barracks for many years. She also worked for the Butler County Library.

Leona had a very kind heart and enjoyed having the neighbor's children playing in the yard and making them her famous “Buck & Buck” pan cakes and chicken soup and biscuits.

She was the oldest living member of Saint John's Reformed Church in Chicora where she played the piano and organ.

She was married to George C. Miller, who died July 25, 1978.

Leona is survived by her granddaughters, Julie and Horacio Gomez of Miami, Fla., Liberty Edgar of Ambridge, Pa., Tracy Miller of Butler and Melissa Miller of Clarion, Pa.; her great-grandchildren, Alexandria, Padro, Aucho and Sophia Gomez, Taylor and Austin Edgar, Emilee Jack, Cody Deal and Mary and Tim Sigworth; her sisters-in-law, Marie and Susie Miller; and several nieces and nephews, including her special nephew, Rich Hemphill, who always came and visited with her.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her son, George R. Miller, who died June 17, 1991; her brothers, Jack Hemphill and Richard Hemphill; and her great-granddaughter, Ashlee Elizabeth Jack.

MILLER — Friends of Leona M. “Grandma Bucky” Miller, who died Saturday, April 23, 2016, will be received from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the STEIGHNER FUNERAL HOME, at the corner of 111 E. Slippery Rock and Main streets, Chicora, and from 10 to 11 a.m. until the time of service at the Saint John Reformed Church, West Slippery Rock Street, Chicora.Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the church with the Rev. John Pistorius, pastor, officiating.
