Estelle Susan “Susie” (Durham) Schulte, 88, of Slippery Rock died peacefully at her home Thursday.

She was born Dec. 27, 1923, in Danville, Ky., the daughter of the late Claude and Mada Lee (Butler) Durham.

Susie was a kind and giving human being. Even though she suffered great loss in her life, she was truly an optimist. She had not an unkind word for anyone and believed that life is a gift from God to be enjoyed and shared. The sun shone through her smile, and her love is reflected in her friends and family who will miss her dearly.

She was a 1945 graduate of Baroness Erlanger Hospital Nursing School and worked as a registered nurse for Elsie Miller Nursing Home in Wexford and Orchard Manor Nursing home in Grove City until her retirement in 1988. Susie was a member of Plain Grove Presbyterian Church and the Plain Grove Sociable’s.

Surviving are two daughters, Kitty Sue (Sky) Pfahl of Slippery Rock and Sandy L. (Alan) Scholze of Franklin Park; six grandchildren, Kalee Pfahl (Steve) Wells of Culpeper, Va., Krisitn Pfahl of Lexington, Ky., Cory Pfahl of Slippery Rock, Mandy Scholze (Billy) Barge of Eugene, Ore., Brian Scholze of Franklin Park and Lorraine Scholze (Jack) Cooper of Fairfax, Va.; and two great-grandchildren, Banyan A.L. Barge and Jasper W.L. Barge.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack R. Schulte, who she married on March 26, 1946, and who died June 28, 2001; one son, Jack Christian “Chris” Schulte; and her brother, Butler Durham.

SCHULTE — A memorial service for Estelle Susan “Susie” Schulte, who died Thursday, Aug. 30, 2012, will be at Plain Grove Presbyterian Church, 626 Plain Grove Road, Slippery Rock on Sept. 8 at 11 a.m.

Arrangements were handled by the Young Funeral Home, Butler.
