Sliders outmatch BlueSox

Well-rounded effort drives SR past Butler

SLIPPERY ROCK — Andy Chalot experienced a manager's dream Wednesday night.

The Slippery Rock Sliders slipper watched his starting pitcher record six scoreless innings, his team play errorless ball and his batters pound out 16 hits in an 8-2 Prospect League victory over the Butler BlueSox at Critchfield Park.

Every player in the Sliders' lineup had at least one hit. The bottom four hitters in the order were a collective 10 for 17 with seven runs scored and six RBI.

"We're not going to the playoffs. These guys are tired and want to go home," Chalot said. "But it's still baseball. A game is a game and the competitive spirit is still there."

The Prospect League regular season ends Saturday.

Left-hander Cody Dearth allowed the BlueSox only three hits in six innings. He struck out a season-high eight.

After throwing 108 pitches, Dearth didn't start the seventh inning. He entered the game with a 1-3 record, a 9.19 earned run average with opponents batting .347 against him.

"We did nothing with him. We've struggled against left-handers all year," BlueSox manager Jason Wuerfel said. "The umpire was generous with the corners and (Dearth) did the smart thing. He kept putting the ball out there."

BlueSox third baseman Adam Jury, a Slippery Rock University infielder, was ejected after arguing a called third strike on him in the sixth. Wuerfel was ejected moments later.

It was Wuerfel's first ejection of the season. Neither he nor Jury will be available for tonight's game against Lorain County (Ohio) at Pullman Park.

"This loss wasn't on the umpire, not when you give up 16 hits and eight runs," Wuerfel said. "We had some pitches to hit and didn't do it."

Third baseman Kyle Mossbarger wielded the biggest bat for Slippery Rock, producing a single, a double, a triple, three RBI and two runs scored. He had a chance to hit for the cycle, but he flied out in the eighth.

"Kyle was on fire early in the season, hitting around .300," Chalot said. "Then he hit a dreadful slump and slipped all the way to .228.

"He made some adjustments and he's hitting well again. He never gave up on himself."

Mossbarger is hitting .271 on the season.

The Sliders have two home games remaining, Friday and Saturday, while the BlueSox also close at home Saturday night.

"We lost seven pitchers to injury before the all-star break," Wuerfel said. "This has been one of those years where nothing has gone right."

Notes: The beginning of Wednesday's game was delayed 35 minutes by rain. ... The BlueSox hold a 6-5 lead in the season series with the Sliders. ... A suspended game between the teams, with Butler leading 16-8 in the fifth inning, might be completed at 11 a.m. Saturday at Pullman Park if it has any bearing on the playoff race.
