PHOENIX - Steve Nash edged Shaquille O'Neal by 34 points to win the NBA's most valuable player award, the fourth-closest margin since the media began determining the winner in 1980-81.

The official announcement Sunday detailed the balloting by a panel of 127 sports writers and broadcasters in the United States and Canada.

Nash, who led Phoenix to an NBA-best 62 victories in his first season with the Suns, received 1,066 points. O'Neal, who left the Los Angeles Lakers for Miami and helped the Heat to the best record in the Eastern Conference, received 1,032.

MILAN, Italy - Steve Webster won his first PGA European Tour event, closing with five birdies on the last 10 holes Sunday for a 4-under 68 at the Italian Open.Webster finished at 18 under at the Castello di Tolcinasco Golf Club.Bradley Dredge (69), Richard Finch (70) and Anders Hansen (66) tied for second three shots back.

BARCELONA, Spain - Kimi Raikkonen led all the way in winning the Spanish Grand Prix on Sunday, denying Fernando Alonso a fourth straight victory in race before a home crowd of 115,000 that included King Juan Carlos.Alonso was trying to become the first Spaniard to capture his national race since it was first run 54 years ago.Alonso maintained his standings lead with 44 points, and Jarno Trulli held second with 26.

ROME - Rafael Nadal edged French Open runner-up Guillermo Coria 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (6) Sunday to win the Rome Masters in a match that lasted more than five hours.The match, which began in bright sunlight and concluded 5 hours, 14 minutes later in darkness, was a repeat of Nadal's victory over Coria in the Monte Carlo Masters final last month.
