Saxonburg man accused of hitting 2-year-old girl

A 2-year-old girl suffered traumatic injury to her face after a Saxonburg man allegedly slapped her, state police said.

Bryce F. Butler, 21, has been charged with felony counts of aggravated assault and endangering the welfare of children and misdemeanor simple assault for an incident reported Jan. 18.

Police said in the affidavit that a Children & Youth Services worker responded to a report of the assault and observed injuries to the girl’s left cheek and right ear. The girl and other children in the residence told the worker that Butler had caused the injuries.

An officer was present at Allegheny Valley Hospital for an evaluation of the 2-year-old girl’s injuries, which included bruising inside and outside her right ear and bruising along the left eyelid and ear. Police said Butler was interviewed at the hospital and told police that the girl’s injuries resulted from her falling down stairs.

The doctor performing the evaluation said the girl’s injuries were not consistent with a fall, according to documents. In the doctor’s report, the reason for the girl’s injuries was listed as “alleged child abuse” with diagnoses of facial contusions, contusions of right ear and nonaccidental traumatic injury.

Butler was placed in Butler County Prison in lieu of $50,000 bail. On Wednesday, he waived his right to a preliminary hearing before District Judge Sue Haggerty. The charges were held for Common Pleas court.
