Second-grader collects supplies to help homeless people
For more than a year, 7-year-old Ashlynd, a Mars Area Elementary School second-grader, has been collecting coats, gloves, hats, blankets, food, water and toiletries to support homeless people in the Pittsburgh area through “Ashlynd’s Homeless Project.”
She is the daughter of Amber and Cameron Warba of Valencia.
Ashlynd shared with her mother a dream in which she was shopping for the homeless and bought over half of the store with her own money.
Since then, Ashlynd has raised thousands of dollars in donations and served the Pittsburgh area homeless population by hand-delivering care packages to people on the streets and serving with Harvest Street Mission. In January 2022, Ashlynd and her family distributed donations as part of an event, hosted by the Mission from Mars community service organization.
This year, in addition to collecting donations, Ashlynd is selling bracelets and keychains with a portion of all sales going toward her project. In December 2022, her school held a collection to support the project.
