Eva Elizabeth Hurd

Eva Elizabeth Hurd, 94, a Grove City resident since 1963, formerly of Harrisville and Galeton, Pa., died at 12:30 p.m. Thursday at the Grove Manor Nursing Home, Grove City, after a lengthy illness. She made her home at Grove Manor for the past 6Z\x years.

Born in Galeton, Nov. 26, 1915, she was the daughter of Henry Newcomb and Mary Smith Newcomb.

She married Stanley Howard Hurd on March 2, 1946. He died July 23, 1991. She then married Russell S. Hurd in June 1993; he died in September 2001.

She retired in 1978 after 32 years of teaching. She taught for 22 years at Har-Mer Elementary School, Harrisville, and formerly taught in different one- room country schools in north central Pennsylvania for 10 years.

Mrs. Hurd was a member of the First Baptist Church of Grove City since 1954.

She graduated from Mansfield College with a bachelor of science degree in teaching. She was a beloved classroom teacher and Sunday school teacher. She enjoyed playing the piano at church and at the nursing home. Eva was a very giving person, and she especially enjoyed making baby quilts. She loved visiting and spending time with family and friends.

Surviving are children, James S. Hurd and his wife, Kathleen S., of Grove City and Aldine A. "Deanie" Elliott and her husband, Ronald B., of Downingtown; a brother, Milton C. Newcomb and his wife, Millicent, of Ulysses, Pa.; and four grandchildren, Kathryn M. Hurd, Ronald J. Hurd, Timothy D. Hurd and Faith E. Waterhouse and her husband Timothy.

She was preceded in death by her parents, both husbands and nine brothers and sisters.

<B>HURD</B> — Visitation for Eva Elizabeth Hurd, who died Thursday, Sept. 16, 2010, will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday in the <B>Cunningham Funeral Home Inc.</B>, 306 Bessemer Ave., Grove City. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the funeral home with the Rev. David Johnson, pastor of the First Baptist Church, Grove City, officiating. Burial will be in the Hurd Family Cemetery, Galeton, Pa.
