PITTSBURGH — Samuel Chamberlin Newbury, the longtime producer of the “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood” public television show, has died.

Newbury was 69 when he died Thursday of cancer in his Pittsburgh home.

Newbury was from Concord, Mass., and got his start in TV as a cameraman for Jim Lehrer, the eventual host of the Public Broadcasting Service’s “NewsHour,” at KERA-TV in Dallas.

Newbury came to WQED as a cameraman in 1974. He wound up producing the Mister Rogers show in 1981.

Newbury later also became director of production for Family Communications, the production company now known as Fred Rogers Co., where he helped make programs to deal with various problems and social issues.
