2 charged for breaking into laundry boxes in city apartment
Butler City police accused two people of cutting security camera wires and stealing coins from dryer machines in an apartment building Monday.
Curtis M. Maciel, 33, and Bella R. Burk, 24, were both charged Tuesday with felonies burglary and criminal conspiracy as well as summary criminal mischief for the incident Monday night.
Police said surveillance video at the building on West Jefferson Street showed a person, later identified as Burk, entering the laundry room through a window. Burk is seen letting Maciel in through a nearby door.
Once inside, Maciel cut locks on the dryer boxes to gain access to the money, police said. According to documents, Burk moved about the room, eventually noticing the security camera toward the ceiling. A wire was cut, and the footage ends.
Police said different footage showed the two exiting the same door Maciel entered through.
The affidavit did not specify how much money was stolen. The damage to the camera and locks amounted to $120, police said.
As of Wednesday, preliminary hearings for Maciel and Burk have not been scheduled.
