FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — New England linebacker Tedy Bruschi practiced with the Patriots, eight months after he had a minor stroke.Doctors cleared Bruschi to return over the weekend, and the Patriots, who have struggled defensively during a 3-3 start, welcomed him back.Coach Bill Belichick will decide when to use him in a game, but Bruschi said he has no doubt it will be this season. The Patriots have a bye this weekend and their next game is at home against Buffalo on Oct. 30.

KIRKLAND, Wash. — Seattle Seahawks safety Ken Hamlin, severely beaten outside a Seattle nightclub, was moved out intensive care and into a private room, the player's representative told a newspaper.The representative, Joel Anderson of Capital Sports & Entertainment, told The Herald of Everett in an e-mail that the player had been moved, but he didn't know whether doctors had upgraded the safety's condition from serious but stable, the description provided since Hamlin suffered a fractured skull and a blood clot near the left side of his brain in the assault early Monday morning.Coach Mike Holmgrem said all Seahawks players and coaches are now prohibited from entering Pioneer Square, the historic Seattle bar and restaurant district just north of Qwest Field.

TAMPA, Fla. — Tampa Bay quarterback Brian Griese will miss the rest of the season after tearing ligaments in his left knee.Griese was injured during the second quarter of Sunday's 27-13 victory over Miami, and just before Tuesday's NFL trade deadline the Bucs acquired Tim Rattay as a backup for Chris Simms and Luke McCown.

BALTIMORE — Leo Mazzone agreed to a three-year contract with the Baltimore Orioles, according to a source close to the negotiations, who spoke to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity.Mazzone, considered to be one of the finest pitching coaches in the majors, has been in the Atlanta organization since 1979 and was pitching coach of the Braves since 1990. He will replace Ray Miller, who served as pitching coach of the Orioles since June 26, 2004.

MIAMI — New York Yankees bench coach Joe Girardi was hired as manager of the Florida Marlins, agreeing to a three-year contract.Girardi, who also interviewed for the Tampa Bay job, spent 15 years as a major league catcher, then went into broadcasting in 2004 and came out of the booth to join the Yankees' staff this season.

CORAL GABLES, Fla. — With Hurricane Wilma expected to arrive with potentially devastating force in Florida this weekend, school and Atlantic Coast Conference officials postponed Saturday's game between Georgia Tech and No. 6 Miami.The teams will now play at Miami on Nov. 19. Miami's scheduled trip to Wake Forest on Nov. 17 — a Thursday night game — will now be played on Saturday, Nov. 12.No. 20 West Virginia's trip to Tampa to face South Florida also was postponed.
