SRU gridders earn academic all-district

SLIPPERY ROCK — Slippery Rock University guard Kyle Henderson and defensive end Marcus Martin have been named first team Academic All-District by the College Sports Information Directors of America.

Henderson, a senior, has a 3.57 grade point average as a dual major in criminology and safety management. He has started 34 consecutive games on the offensive line.

Martin, a sophomore, has a 3.54 GPA ion the safety management program. He leads all active NCAA football players at any level with 1.10 career sacks per game. He has seven sacks to lead the team this year.

BUTLER TWP — Butler volleyball freshman Maria Lucas has been named all section this season, the only freshman in the league to gain that honor.

Lucas led the Golden Tornado in most statistical categories and was second in kills.

[naviga:h3]Prospect League revamps divisions[/naviga:h3]

The Prospect League has added franchises in Lisle, Ill., and Lafayette, Ind., for the 2016 baseball season and will have two six-team divisions.

The Butler BlueSox will play in the East Division with Champion City, Chillicothe, Kokomo, Lafayette and West Virginia. The West Division is comprised of Danville, Hannibal, Lisle, Terre Haute, Quincy and Springfield.

Teams will play a 60-game schedule with Opening Day set for May 26.

Lafayette will replace the Jamestown Jammers, who left for the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League. Lisle will replace the Richmond River Rats in the West Division. Richmond’s ownership sold the team due to declining attendance. The River Rats averaged 573 fans per game last year, falling from 989 in their first year.
