Butler County man accused of theft after online sale post draws attention

A Butler County man faces charges of theft following an alleged sale of a stolen chain saw through Facebook Marketplace.

State police in Butler arrested Jacob Ruth II, 23, of Harmony on Dec. 13, after a chain saw reported missing from a garage in October allegedly matched an item Ruth tried to sell online. The chain saw had initially gone missing from Schrec’s Custom Bldgs. & Remodeling Inc. in Saxonburg, according to a report.

Police say they identified an item advertised under the account “Jacob Ruth” with the description: “20V Max Brushless 12 inch Dewalt battery operated chainsaw! Needs gone ASAP!” Using a fictitious name, a state police officer agreed to purchase the item at a nearby travel center Dec. 13.

Ruth arrived at the travel center, carrying a chain saw that police say matched the online item, the report says. Police then arrested Ruth, seizing the chain saw, the report says.

Police compared the chain saw reported missing with Marlin Schrecengost, the owner of Schrec’s Custom Bldgs. & Remodeling, following the arrest. Ruth worked for Schrecengost and had access to the garage following the disappearance of the chain saw, Schrecengost says.
