Butler graduate Melanie Buczko, a sophomore pole vaulter at Bucknell University, will compete at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships this weekend in Fayetteville, Ark.
Buczko is the second woman in Bucknell history to compete in this meet, joining Jill Wise, who placed ninth in the triple jump in 1988.
Buczko recently won her second ECAC indoor pole vault crown with a leap of 12 feet, 9½ inches. Her career-best is 13-5½, set at the NYU FasTimes Invitational Feb. 25 in New York City.
JUPITER, Fla. - Rick Ankiel is ending a pitching career derailed by injuries and record wildness and will try to make the St. Louis Cardinals' roster as an outfielder.In the 2000 postseason, Ankiel became the first major league player since 1890 to throw five wild pitches in one inning, and he totaled nine wild pitches in four playoff innings.Ankiel is a career .207 hitter in the major leagues, going 18-for-87 with two homers, a double, a triple and nine RBIs.
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Marshall football coach Bob Pruett retired Wednesday after nine years, saying it was time to move on.Pruett is the most successful coach in Marshall history, going 94-23 with five MAC championships and five postseason bowl victories. The Thundering Herd finished their final season in the Mid-American Conference with a 6-6 record. The school joins Conference USA this fall.During his tenure, Pruett coached several future NFL stars, including receiver Randy Moss and quarterbacks Chad Pennington and Byron Leftwich.
