Former VFD treasurer unsuccessfully asks for early

A Butler County judge on Wednesday denied the former treasurer of Winfield Township Volunteer Fire Department medical parole.

---- Judge William Shaffer denied a pro se motion filed by Jodie Lynn Undercuffler, 38, of Jefferson Township, following a short hearing, ruling that Undercuffler should serve her sentence of 9 to 18 months in county prison despite what she said were medical issues that made her a “liability” to the facility.

---- In her motion Undercuffler said she suffers from sleep apnea, “Thyroid disease,” recurring leg swelling, asthma and depression, and told Shaffer that she has had trouble getting prescribed medication at the prison, trouble seeing the facility’s doctor and hasn’t had blood work performed every six weeks as was recommended by a physician.

---- Assistant District Attorney Patricia McLean opposed Undercuffler’s motion on Wednesday.

---- “This was a plea agreement, and we are opposed to a modification of this sentence,” McLean said.

---- Undercuffler was sentenced in December to serve 9 to 18 months in county prison followed by 5 years of probation, and ordered to pay back nearly $68,000 she stole from the fire department starting in 2013, shortly after she took over as treasurer.

---- The missing money went undetected until January of last year, when an internal audit found that Undercuffler had written checks to herself using the organization’s general fund account. Investigators said she used the money to pay household bills.
