Master Gardeners host ‘Winter Wonderings’ speaker series
Get ready to transform a garden this spring!
Questions about landscaping and gardens will be showcased this winter as the Penn State Extension Master Gardener program of Butler County hosts “Winter Wonderings.”
This webinar series will be from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Monday evenings starting Jan. 23.
The cost is $10 per session, and interested participants can register online at extension.psu.edu or by phone at 877-345-0691. Proceeds will benefit the educational outreach of the Butler County program.
On Jan. 23, “Winter Wonderings: With Edges in Place” will explore ways to create an aesthetically-appealing garden using edging techniques.
This session will review how a garden, mindfully constructed to accommodate the human interface with natural form and function, will clearly resonate intent while providing a stable platform for imagination and discovery. Horticulturist Jeremy Schmidt will illustrate some aspects of physical and visual boundaries and discuss several practical methods to define and establish edges that make any garden stand out.
“Doesn’t Grass Just Grow by Itself?” will be the topic pondered by Penn State Extension turf educator Jeff Fowler. This conversation on microclimates, varieties and tips, will be Jan. 30 to help create the best home lawn.
The Feb. 6 session will feature “Creating an Edible Landscape,” an exploration into integrating plants into our landscapes that deliver the aesthetic qualities and ingredients for recipes. Penn State Extension commercial horticulture educator Glen Bupp will discuss plant selections for Pennsylvania gardeners that look great in the garden and can be added to teas, baked goods, cocktails or side dishes.
“Colorful Conifers” will take center stage on Feb. 13 in the final session of “Winter Wonderings.” Retired horticulture educator Martha Smith will share options to add shock and awe to a landscape all season long, with colorful conifers of all sizes. Working with four season foliage colors can be challenging, but Smith will show us how to rethink our landscapes to bring out the best foliage display!
