Police dog killed on duty gets awardPITTSBURGH — A Pittsburgh-area police dog that was stabbed to death in January is being honored by the American Kennel Club.The New York-based organization announced German shepherd Aren is among the second round of winners of the “AKC Paw of Courage” medal.Five-year-old Aren worked with the Port Authority of Allegheny County and was stabbed to death in Wilkinsburg when he reached suspects in a foot pursuit before officers.Aren had four years on the transit police force, and is among five K-9s being honored this week by the organization.
Woman stabs hubby for drinking her beerUNIONTOWN — Police have charged a Pennsylvania woman with stabbing her husband with scissors because he drank one of her beers while she slept.Forty-five-year-old Tracey Lee Giffin faces a preliminary hearing Aug. 31 on charges including aggravated assault.Police say the Uniontown couple was drinking Sunday evening and that Giffin went to bed, but woke up to discover Joseph Giffin had drank one of her beers. Police say he was stabbed and cut in the neck, chest and head with the scissors, and bitten by Giffin on the arms and thumb.Giffin remained in the Fayette County jail unable to post bond Thursday.
Search on for robber who shot employeeBELLE VERNON — Police have been searching for a convenience store robber who shot an employee during the southwestern Pennsylvania heist.Rostraver Township police say the incident occurred Thursday about 4 a.m. at the CoGo’s on Route 51. Employees told a Pittsburgh TV station that the store’s manager was shot in the shoulder.The manager called 911 to report the heist and tried to get to his car, but had to be flown to a Pittsburgh hospital instead. His name and condition were not immediately released.
