Rock baseball sweeps Clarion

Matt Howard's solo home run in the sixth inning gave the Slippery Rock University baseball team the lead for good in a 4-3 victory over Clarion University in the first game of a doubleheader Sunday.

The Rock (10-10, 4-4), also picked up a 10-2 triumph in the nightcap to sweep a four-game weekend series against the Golden Eagles.

Adam Jury added an RBI double and SRU plated runs via a walk and an error to pull out the win.

In the second contest, SRU scored six runs in the first inning to erase a 1-0 deficit, highlighted by RBI singles by Jamison Walck and Billy Messer (Slippery Rock High) and a three-run home run by John Murray, all coming after two outs.

Walck, a freshman, finished the four-game weekend, batting seven-for-14 with six RBI, five runs scored and leads the team with a .403 batting average.

SoftballThe Rock squad picked up a pair of wins at the Salem (Va.) Invitational Saturday, downing Davis & Elkins 8-0 and Ohio Valley 17-5, both in five innings.Shaylee Ianno tossed a complete-game one-hitter with four strikeouts in the opener as Jessica Kortz hit a two-run homer and finished 2-for-2 with two runs scored and four RBI.Butler High graduate Jenna Geibel had a home run and a single and scored two runs.In Game 2, Kortz hit a three-run homer and a grand slam and Geibel added a two-run homer. Sheree Horvath also went 2-for-2 and scored for runs.On Sunday, SRU (8-5) blanked Virginia State 14-0 in five innings to close out the tournament, the team's sixth shutout for The Rock this season.Kortz went 4-for-4 with two home runs and five RBI and Rachel Henderson went 4-for-4 with three singles, a double and an RBI. Horvath and Shardea Croes each went 3-for-4 and Croes adding three RBI.

LacrosseAriel Knox, Amy Halls and Alexis Slutsky tallied three goals apiece to pace SRU to a 17-7 triumph over host Tiffin Saturday.Emma VanDenburg and Katie Roof and Casey Quinn added two goals each for The Rock (3-1).
