WEST CHESTER — Slippery Rock University's Jen Harpp shattered the PSAC Championship meet record by more than a full minute in winning the 10,000-meter run Thursday.
Harpp's time of 34 minutes, 16.89 seconds snapped the league record of 35:23, set by West Chester's Julie Bowers in 1984. Harpp's record time is third fastest in the nation this season.
HERMITAGE — John Aubrey Sr. of Aubrey's Dubbs Dred Golf Course, along with amateurs Bob Walters, Phil Loverick Sr. and Ray Downing, won the Edge Pro-3 Amateur Tournament at Tam O'Shanter Friday.The foursome fired a 128 to win by two strokes over the group led by Elmer Bland Jr of Meadow Lane Golf Course.Aubrey also picked up a professional skins contest win at Hole No. 14.
COLOGNE, Germany — Pittsburgh Penguins players Sergei Gonchar and Evgeni Malkin will join up with the Russia team at the ice hockey world championship in the next few days.Russia coach Vyacheslav Bykov will benefit from the extra firepower after the Penguins were eliminated from the Stanley Cup playoffs by the Montreal Canadiens.A two-time Olympian, Malkin will play in his fourth worlds and was a leading figure in Pittsburgh's 2009 Stanley Cup title run, earning the playoffs' most valuable player award.Gonchar, a four-time Olympian, had 13 goals and 49 assists in 75 games this season. He was planning to leave later Friday, while Malkin expects to travel on Saturday.
ATLANTA — The Atlanta Hawks made significant improvement under Mike Woodson. They just wondered how much farther he could take them.Woodson was let go Friday as coach of the Hawks, just four days after the team was swept in the second round of the playoffs by the Orlando Magic.General manager Rick Sund, after consulting with the ownership group, decided not to offer Woodson a new contract. So ended a six-year coaching tenure in which the Hawks won just 13 games in his first season, then improved their record every year since — including three straight playoff appearances.Atlanta won 53 games this season, the most since 1996-97, and captured the No. 3 seed in the Eastern Conference.
SAN ANTONIO — Rain washed out the second round of the Texas Open Friday, and PGA officials said more bad weather this weekend could push the tournament into Monday.More than three inches of rain soaked the Oaks Course at TPC San Antonio, where leader Matt Jones and the rest of the field never got on the course. They'll try again Saturday, when Jones will start with a one-stroke lead over Paul Stankowski.Tournament officials delayed play for more than seven hours Friday before a late storm cell finally forced them to give up.Only the second round will be played Saturday, White said. The hope is that the final 36 holes could then be played Sunday, but White did not rule out extending the tournament into Monday if necessary.
