PLEASANT HILLS — Authorities say a man died in a fire in an apartment building just outside Pittsburgh.

Emergency officials in Allegheny County said the blaze started in a third-floor unit in the Neopolitan Suites building in Pleasant Hills shortly after 8 p.m. Wednesday.

County emergency services chief Alvin Henderson said local police tried to enter the apartment but were unable to do so.

Firefighters managed to extinguish the blaze before it spread to other apartments and later recovered the body of the victim.

His name was not released pending notification of his relatives. An autopsy was planned to determine the cause of death.

The cause of the blaze remains under investigation.

PITTSBURGH — Two days of public hearings were set to begin today in Pittsburgh on stricter pollution rules for coal-burning power plants proposed by the Environmental Protection Agency.Similar hearings were held earlier this week in Atlanta, Denver and Washington.Environmental activists planned at least two events in Pittsburgh to support the regulations to combat what they say is man-made climate change caused by carbon-based pollution. Meanwhile, the United Mine Workers of America rallied to oppose the rules which they say will force some power plants to close, cost miners and others their jobs, and make the power supply less reliable.The EPA is also taking written comments through Oct. 16.
