SRU's Carr qualifies for nationals in javelin
Tony Carr headlined the Slippery Rock University track and field effort at the SRU Invitational Saturday with a NCAA Championship javelin qualifying throw of 220 feet, 5 inches.
Carr's toss guarantees him a trip to Abilene, Tex. for the NCAA Division II Outdoor Nationals May 26-28.
Abby McKissick shattered the SRU school record in the pole vault with a leap of 11 feet, 6¼ inches to lead the women's effort.
Kristen Jones won the 200 with a time of 25.8 and long jump with a leap of 18-7 and was second in the 100 (12.5). Two athletes that improved upon their provisional qualifying marks were Tim Tray in the pole vault (a personal-best 16-0) and Dave Pavone in men's javelin (197-11).
Other winners were: Preston Gibbs in the men's long jump (22-7) and triple jump (46-2¼); Eric Price in the men's shot put (49-2); Heather Kozuchowsky in the women's shot put (44-5) and Christie Taras in the women's discus (131-09). Former NCAA Division II national champion Karyn McCready competed as an unattached participant in the javelin (139-09).
The women's 400-meter relay team of Emily Bush, Alison Gardner, Jill Rekich (Butler) and Katie Jones also captured first place with a time of 49.05.
Thiel's 400 relay team was second 50.2), which included Moniteau graduate Kirsten Schrecongost (Moniteau).
The SRU squad swept all three doubles matches en route to a 6-3 win at West Chester.The win qualified SRU (5-9) for the PSAC Championships next weekend at Bloomsburg.Ryan Steeh led the way, winning his No. 1 doubles and No. 1 singles match.
Kate Ingram and Jamie Lemoncelli won the No. 2 doubles 8-6 and Ashley Greene (Seneca Valley) won at No. 1 singles 6-4, 6-2 in SRU's 5-2 loss at West Chester Saturday.The Rock dropped to 6-11 with the setback.
The BC3 softball split its doubleheader with CCAC-South on Saturday, winning 12-11 before dropping the second game 7-4.In the first game, Lara Hayden had a home run and two singles, Val Fair (Butler) three singles and Nikki Cranmer had a double and single for the Pioneers.In the nightcap, Fair homered, Ali Schnur (Butler) and Caryn Azure each doubled and Cranmer had a double and single.
Bethany picked up a doubleheader sweep 5-4 and 11-8 against Grove City College on Saturday.In the first contest Mike Ritter went 3-for-3 in the opener, helping the Wolverines take an early 3-0 lead and A.J. Stedford added a pair of hits.In the second game, the Wolverines took a 4-0 lead before the Bison mounted another comeback.Ray Mertz had three hits, Michael Busin two hits, two RBI and three runs scored, Jerry Ott had two RBI and Bryan Pierrot added two hits and scored twice, all for Grove City (4-17, 1-8).
