YORK — When a white-tailed deer crashed through the windshield of their moving school bus Monday morning, four Northern York school students sprang into action.

Brothers Jon and Chris Peiffer Jr., as well as brothers Albert and James Halterman III, did what needed to be done, according to Wellsville Fire Lt. Alex McCoy.

“When we got to the scene they were calm and in control of the situation,” McCoy said. “They did an excellent job.”

McCoy praised the teens and said he’s hoping to have the fire company officially honor them.

State police said the bus was carrying 25 students, grades 6 through 12, and was northbound on Route 74 west of Ridge Road in Warrington Township about 7:10 a.m. Monday.

A southbound car struck the deer, sending it airborne and through the windshield of the bus, police said.

None of the middle- and high-school students on the bus was hurt, according to Northern York School District business manager Jason Young.

Bus driver Barbara Reiff, 59, of Dillsburg, suffered moderate injuries and was transported by ambulance from the scene. She was in stable condition Monday afternoon in Holy Spirit Hospital, a hospital spokeswoman said.

The deer landed on top of her, according to Young. It was killed in the crash.

Chris, 17, tended to Reiff, administering first aid and calming her, according to Halterman. Chris directed that blankets be found and brought to him, to keep Reiff warm.

“I was there two minutes after it happened,” Halterman said. “Jon dragged the deer out of the bus. James was on the phone with 911 ... and Albert got everybody out of the bus and made sure they were OK.”
