SEWICKLEY — Authorities said a worker apparently overcome by fumes at a sewage plant died from injuries suffered in a subsequent fall, not toxic gas.

The Allegheny County medical examiner's office ruled Friday Jack Hogan III, 31, of Baden died of blunt force trauma. The office ruled the death an accident.

Hogan was working in a 30-foot-deep hole at the Sewickley Borough wastewater treatment plant Thursday when he radioed for help and tried to climb out.

Investigators said he fell back in, and three others working at the plant were overcome by fumes when they tried to rescue him. One worker remains hospitalized.

The federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating the incident, which is routine in workplace deaths.

PITTSBURGH — The initial effort to bring down two remaining spans of a nearly 60-year-old Pennsylvania Turnpike bridge near Pittsburgh was only half successful.The main span of the bridge in Harmar Township was imploded July 13, and implosions on the two remaining spans were done Friday.A 268-foot span on the western side of the river did fall as planned into a back channel of the river. But explosives failed to bring down a 213-foot span on the east side of the river in the July 13 implosion.Turnpike officials said the explosions weakened that span, however, and crews pulled it down with heavy equipment Friday.Twin concrete spans nearby are replacing the bridge. One is already open and carrying both directions of Turnpike traffic. The second replacement span is scheduled to open in November.

PHILADELPHIA — A 21-year-old New Jersey man was sentenced to prison for vomiting on another spectator and his 11-year-old daughter in the stands at a Philadelphia Phillies game.Matthew Clemmens of Cherry Hill, N.J., pleaded guilty in May to charges of assault, harassment and disorderly conduct in an incident that led to outrage across the country.A family court judge Friday sentenced Clemmens to 1 to 3 months in prison, 2 years of probation and 50 hours of community service. The maximum penalty was two years in jail.Clemmens admitted he stuck his fingers down his throat and vomited on Michael Vangelo, an off-duty Easton police captain, and one of Vangelo's daughters at a Phillies-Nationals game April 14 at Citizens Bank Park.

HARRISBURG — Northeastern Pennsylvania is getting a new area code: 272.The state Public Utility Commission announced Friday the new designation will be used after available phone numbers in the 570 area code are exhausted.The region is expected to run out of 570 numbers during 2011. When that happens, phone users will be assigned numbers with the 272 code, even though they live in the same region.Callers will have to dial all 10 digits of a local number — instead of the current seven — when the 272 area code is implemented.The number 272 was assigned by the North American Numbering Plan Administrator. The agency is the neutral third-party area code relief planner for Pennsylvania.

HARRISBURG — An industry group led by companies drilling for natural gas from the Marcellus Shale said Friday former Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge was hired as its strategic adviser.A Marcellus Shale Coalition spokesman said Ridge's Washington, D.C.-based communications and policy groups will be paid $75,000 a month for help in such areas as public outreach, education and coalition building.Messages left for Ridge Global were not immediately returned, but a statement by the coalition quoted Ridge as saying he would work "to ensure worker safety and environmental protection, and to encourage the fullest economic benefit for our state, our communities and the entire workforce" involved in drilling and transporting the natural gas.
