Zelie gets another gold coin
ZELIENOPLE — As the Fourth of July draws closer, the Zelienople Friends of the Park has received another anonymous donation of a solid gold coin.
It was the sixth time in six years that the organization received such a donation, which it has used for the collection drive for the annual fireworks display, said Alecia Flood, Zelienople parks and recreation director.
The coin was deposited in one of the change containers in the borough to collect donations for the fireworks.
The coin has been different each time, but each one has been a 1-ounce solid gold coin. Past coins have included a South African Krugerrand, a U.S. Liberty coin and a U.S. $50 coin.
The last one was donated in December 2013.
The latest one is a Canadian coin that the friends group sold to Maddalon Jewelers in Zelienople for about $1,225, Flood said.
Even with the money from the coin, the Friends of the Park still is seeking donations to meet its goal of $6,500 for the display, she said.
In addition to the fireworks, the parks department will hold its Derby Duckie Race at 2:30 p.m. July 4. In past years, it had been held on a different weekend, but the parks department thought it would get more attention if it was part of the July 4th festivities, Flood said.
At the event, 1,000 numbered rubber ducks are put down the water slide at the pool. Attendees buy tickets for $10 each and the first three ducks to cross the finish line win $1,000, $500 and $250, respectively. Tickets are on sale.
Proceeds from the duck derby will support the fireworks display and upgrades for the pool, Flood said.
Donations for the fireworks can be sent to: Friends of the Park, P.O. Box 142, Zelienople, PA 16063.
