SRU basketball sweeps Mansfield

SLIPPERY ROCK — Both Slippery Rock University basketball teams continued their hot starts Sunday with wins over Mansfield at Morrow Field House.

The Rock men improved to 8-1 overall, 2-1 in PSAC play with a 78-71 victory. SRU’s women moved to 7-2 on the season, 2-1 in league play, with a 69-60 triumph.

Men

Five players scored in double figures for The Rock. Khalid Gates led the way with 20 points and 12 rebounds. He had three assists as well. Gates is averaging 18.7 points over the last seven games.

Bobby Clifford produced 14 points and six rebounds while Lashon Lindsey had 13 points and eight rebounds. Johnathan McFall and Amante Britt netted 11 points each. Britt also had three steals, moving him into ninth on SRU’s all-time list with 118.

The Mountaineers (2-5, 1-2) were led by Saraj Ali with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Idris Ali contributed 17 points.

Women

The Rock women are 3-0 at Morrow Field House so far this season. The program has not started 4-0 at home since the 2015-16 season.

Kennedy Middleton scored 19 points, grabbed nine rebounds, had three assists and two steals for SRU. Isabellah Middleton tallied 11 points and 10 rebounds to go with four steals. Jada Ward had career-highs of 12 points and six rebounds. Bella Long had 10 points.

SRU had a season-high 49 rebounds and blocked a season-best six shots. Jasmine Hilton led Mansfield (1-6, 0-3) with 16 points and seven rebounds.

Both Rock teams return to action Monday at Morrow Field House against Bloomsburg. The women play at 1 p.m., the men at 3 p.m.
