Dares lead to theft charges for 2, police said
A series of dares resulted in two men being charged for stealing items from a Cranberry Township neighborhood, police said.
Cranberry Township police responded to reports of two people peeking into vehicles on Lewisham Road around 1 a.m. on Sept. 18.
On Sunday, officers charged Alexander J. Rodriguez, 22, of Wexford, and Sebastian M. Sorg, 20, of Cranberry, with seven misdemeanors each including theft from a motor vehicle, conspiracy, evading arrest and loitering and prowling at nighttime and summary disorderly conduct.
When police arrived on scene, two males fled on foot to Graham Park. They were found in a marsh area near the park’s entrance and identified as Rodriguez and Sorg.
In their possession was a black backpack containing an unopened package addressed to someone on Lewisham Road, a case of prescription pills, eye drops and medical marijuana not prescribed to Sorg or Rodriguez, vape cartridges, a tripod, a charging cord box and a winter face mask, police said.
Rodriguez told police he stole the Amazon package from a centralized mailbox on Lewisham Road after Sorg dared him to take it. The book bag was acquired after Sorg dared Rodriguez to take it from a nearby driveway, police said.
Rodriguez reported to officers that he and Sorg continued searching unlocked vehicles on the street and taking items.
Both Sorg and Rodriguez are scheduled to appear for preliminary hearings before District Judge Kevin Flaherty on Jan. 13, 2023.
