Stock cars line up for football

Demolition derby slated

CONNOQUNESSING TWP - The players face each other with the ball between them, ready to work it down the playing field and score.

But this is stock car football, a twist on soccer with different rules and equipment. The ball weighs 200-pound and is the only thing allowed to cause damage to the players, which are demolition cars. Cars that cause damage to other cars are penalized.

It's one of three motor sports events scheduled as part of the daily arena entertainment at this year's Butler Farm Show.

Stock car football will be at 8 p.m. Aug. 9, but the first arena event is Aug. 8 with the championship figure eight race.

The race, which also begins at 8 p.m., uses compact cars so the action can take place in front of the grandstand.

Five to eight cars move between 5 and 15 mph.

The demolition derby will be at 8 p.m. Aug. 12.

The modern demolition derby bares little resemblance to the sport that started in the 1950s, according to promotional material from JM Productions, the Hamburg, N.Y., company producing the three motorsport events.

Originally, the sport consisted of cars smashing, piling, and causing destruction. The derby spectators see today, according to the company, is more like a chess match where strategy is key.

On the two other evenings, trucks, tractors, and stock semis will compete in pulling contests in the arena.

The pull for modified stock, 4x4 trucks, unlimited super stock tractors and smoker series tractors begins at 6 p.m. Aug. 11.

Stock semis and tri-axle truck pulls start at 8 p.m. Aug. 13.

With the exception of the figure eight race, there is a $2 charge for arena events.
