William Mason

Mason

William “Bill” Kelly Mason, 89, of Gilpin Township, passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2022, at Quality Life Services in Sarver.

He was a son of the late Charles W. Mason and Myrtle (Kelly) Mason, and was born on Aug. 1, 1933, in Sarver.

Bill graduated in 1952 from Freeport High School, and was an active member of his class throughout his high school years.

He was a veteran, having served in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1955 in Germany, and was honorably discharged as a corporal.

In 1958, he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry from Grove City College. He continued post-graduate studies at the University of Pittsburgh and Indiana University, graduating with a degree in education.

On May 3, 1958, Bill married Beverly (Shuey) Mason at the former Assumption Church in Leechburg.

He was a current member of Christ the King Parish in Gilpin Township, where he served as a past member of parish council and past representative of pastoral council for the local deanery.

Bill started working as a science teacher in New Kensington, then continued teaching at Kiski Area School District. He then worked as a health inspector at Allegheny County Health Department in Pittsburgh. He followed as a safety inspector for CNA Insurance Company, as well as Liberty Mutual Insurance Company. He continued as safety inspector for the U.S. Department of Labor, from where he retired in 1996 as area director in Pittsburgh. During his years of employment, Bill served on the board of directors of the Learning Disabilities Association of Pennsylvania), board of trustees of LDAP, board of directors of Western Pennsylvania Safety Council, and curriculum adviser of Point Park College.

Bill was a longtime member of the Republican National Committee (being a strong Republican) and the National Rifle Association — a firm believer in the Constitution, especially the Second Amendment.

He enjoyed hunting and fishing at camp for many years with his friends and family. Bill was a strong, devoted, caring and, above all, loving man to all his family and friends. He would help anyone with whatever or however he could. We can all remember Bill with his mouth open wide and his hearty laugh. He was such a fun and happy soul until Alzheimer’s took hold and changed him for the rest of his long years. Bill is at peace now with his Lord, whom he loved and lived his life by, and raising his family with a strong belief in our Lord, Jesus Christ.

He leaves behind his loving wife of 64 years, Beverly, of Gilpin Township. He is also survived by his two sons and a daughter, six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, his son, David K. Mason (Lori) of Ligonier and their three children, Brian K. Mason (Kristen) of Clover, S.C., (and their grandchildren, Bryson, Declan and Melrose), Melissa M. Miller (Keith) of Emmaus, Pa., and Mikayla M. Mason of Brooklyn, N.Y.; his son, Patrick W. Mason (Margo) and their family, William R. and Gabriella R. Mason of Tarentum; and his daughter, Tara Leigh Harvey (Jeremy) and their son, Hayden, of Gilpin Township.

Also surviving are his sister, Rosemary Heilbrun (Don) of Anaheim, Calif.; his brother, Lee Mason (Mary) of Sarver; his sister-in-law, Betty Mason of Murrysville; and many nieces, nephews and extended family.

Bill will have a joyous meeting in Heaven with his parents; his brothers, Tom and Bob Mason; and his sisters, Dolores Kunselman, Ann Krings and Rita Shelton.
