Donald Downing
Donald James Downing of Seven Fields and formerly of Butler, passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2022, at his residence following a 3-month illness. He was 81 years old.
Donald was born in Butler to Walter and Ella Johnston Downing.
He graduated from Butler High School and later received his master’s degree from the University of Pittsburgh.
He went on to teach in Butler County. He became a principal in the Slippery Rock Area School District, and served as principal to five elementary schools before the district hired principals for each building. He opened the newly constructed Moraine Elementary, where he remained as principal until his retirement. He was well-liked and highly regarded by faculty, staff, parents and students.
He loved to travel and go on long walks.
He is survived by his husband, Kevin Hayson at home; his sister-in-law, Elvajean Downing of Butler; a niece, Sherri (Timothy) McCandless of Slippery Rock; and a nephew, Bobby Downing of Butler.
Don was preceded in death by his brother, Robert Downing.
DOWNING — A visitation for Donald James Downing, who died Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2022, will be held from 5 p.m. until the time of the service at 8 p.m. Saturday at SMITH FUNERAL HOME, 421 New Castle St., Slippery Rock.
Funeral services will be held at 8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home and will be conducted by Brent Allen.
Interment will be Morefield Cemetery in Hermitage.
